We rejoice in the light, and we echo the song.
From There’s a Song in the Air
By Mary Margaret K.
Music, light, the joy of Jesus’ birth heralded from angel choirs! To me, this is the true message of Christmas. The wrappings, the gifts, the sharing, the many activities with family and friends can all be wonderful, but it is the music, the light, the expectation and the joy that are central to the Advent season and Christmas. Without them, the other activities lose their significance.
Christmas music speaks to our hearts and our spirits. Once instilled in us, it usually remains for life. I think of the many Christians I’ve encountered in nursing homes over the years. Most of them, even if robbed of their ability to speak and reason, can still sing the Christmas songs from start to finish. The message of the music remains in their hearts and spirits to sustain them on their life’s path.
“There’s A Song in the Air” was my mother’s favorite Christmas hymn, and so, it is very special to me. Central to our celebration each year as I grew up was setting up a worship center with the Bible open to the Christmas story, and then reading it aloud on Christmas Eve. Also central to our celebration was enjoying the beautiful choir music at our church. That’s probably why I enjoy the choir here at Eureka Christian Church so much. Rehearsing and singing Christmas music each year is an integral part of Terry’s and my Christmas celebration.
The song that comes down through the night to bring the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ to us is a wonderful gift—the gift of Christmas, the gift of our Savior’s love.
Prayer: Thank you, Loving God, for the light and the song that fill our hearts with joy this Christmas season. Thank you for sending us a tiny baby who came bringing a message of love and hope to the world. Help us to spread the good news for the rest of our lives. Amen.
